Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon Memorial Picture Collection Vol. Infinity

This hardcover tribute artbook was self-published by Naoko Takeuchi as a doujinshi on June 30, 1997 and distributed in small numbers at Japan’s Comiket Summer 1997. The Japanese characters for “Original Picture Collection” appear on the cover but “Memorial Picture Collection” is printed in English in the back of the book. The liner notes are printed from pages 64 to 83. While I own this artbook, the scans are from the defunct fansite mahoushoujo.net. Liner note translations, where available, are also from that site.

There is some partial nudity in some illustrations.

The liner notes are printed from pages 64 to 83, which is why the scans jump in number. Scans of this volume were first made available on mahoushoujo.net and were online from 1998-2004, at which point that website went offline. These are the scans and translations of the text/notes as they appeared on mahoushoujo.net. The Infinity artbook occasionally appears on Ebay and usually goes for a few hundred dollars (at least!). It’s not easy to obtain! I was lucky enough to be given one by my friend and former web host, David 🙂

  • Comments from Naoko:

“So many years have already passed since I decided “I will draw a color picture of CG!” when a certain Mr. Apple gave me Apple-ko-chan (my Mac-chan)… This Chibiii is just a color copy of the one I had my designer paint colors on (laugh). Someone pleeeease teach me how to do CG by holding me by the hands and feet!”

  • Model: Usagi in transparent lingerie
  • Art by: Takeuchi Naoko
  • Comments from Naoko:

“I wanted to draw a color picture of her in underwear once. I kinda like it. I wondered if it might be severe, but I heard that Saito-kun, the one in charge of Sailor Moon from K-sha [Kodansha], was surprised to death and upset.”

  • Model: Usagi topless
  • Art by: Takeuchi Naoko
  • Comments from Naoko:

“I wanted to draw a color nude once. I like it quite a bit. Wondering “It might be a bit extreme”, I was expecting some response, but neither the one in charge from K-sha or my staff-chan-tachi told me a word about it (sob). I’m still soft, aren’t I? But a nude is gooood. It’s good ’cause it’s easy! How QUICKLY the picture is completed! I’m impressed!”

  • Model: Usagi
  • Art by: Takeuchi Naoko
  • Comments from Naoko:

“This is the same one as the picture I gave to the fanclub of my dear Kadomatsu Toshiki-samaaaa who colored my college life like in the 80s. (That time, I didn’t like this picture and redrew another one.) Kadomatsu-sama! Please sing!! And, pleeease let’s carry on the idea we go for drink! But I’m not Succhii, so maaaybeee it’s hopeless (laugh).”

“As you notice from the pictures, I became a fan from the anime. (Oh, I do have the comics though I can’t say all (^^;)

When I saw it on TV for the first time, I thought “What an embarrassing anime”, but like many other people, this became my habit… I’ve been purchasing the LDs as soon as it comes out. Since I myself am a comedy manga artist at bottom, I love episodes where Minako of FUKAMI Rica-sama among the “SM” characters does slapsticks, such as EPS78, 109, and 141! (HISAKAWA Aya-sama, I’m sorry(^^; I love the movie “Ami-chan’s First Love” as well, so… But Mercury is awfully “hard to draw”!)

The time when I began to watch this anime and the time when I began to use BBS just overlap, and thanks to that, I went to voice actress related entertainments and stuff with my children, and I’ve been enjoying otaku-feelings at my age. Speaking of which, my oldest daughter (a medical student) is a fan of Uranus and I bothered Kamiya Akira-san [the voice for Professor Tomoe], who I became aquainted with at Mac Expo, to give me Ogata-san’s autograph…

This work which has been entertaining us by means of the original manga and the anime for five years, is finally meeting its end. Takeuchi-san and all the anime staff, thank you very much.”

“You’ve done a fine job on the completion of the serialization!!”

“When Takeuchi-san and I took a trip to New York in fall ’95, we visited my sister’s house (who was living over there due to my brother-in-law’s business). For the two nieces of mine who loved Sailor Moon, Takeuchi-san took a whole bunch of merchandises as souvenir for them in a large bag of Kodansha (Even though it was very heavy!) Thank you for that time. I really think it was super fortunate for my nieces that I am Takeuchi-san’s friend. (Still their rooms are all full of Sailor Moon!) It’s sad that it’s ending, but it’s such a big hit that it sure will revive again some day, right?

By the way… I’ve been getting a lot of culture shocks, since I got to know Takeuchi-san well. Managing that much work load, she’s still got that power to play so hard! Her room is so decorative that I can’t help but fear what to do if an earthquake happens! And she spends money with such a kingly zest that I feel so good!! It’s really fun watching you (laugh). Be my good friend from now on as well (laugh).”

“Comments from Naoko”

“As for this picture, for a project of a certain NAKAYOSHI’s illustrations, a project that manga-artists drew someone else’s works each other (and praised each other?), I, who loved KinChu, drew thiiis awkward Wapiko. I’d never even dreamed I myself would do anime after KinChu. Back then, it was really good old days for NAKAYOSHI… And in ’92, NAKAYOSHI plunged into a warlike period.”

  • Project proposal document of the anime series “Codename wa Sailor V” (which was modified to be “Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon” later)

  • Text reads:

Title: “Codename wa Sailor V”

Original Creator: Takeuchi Naoko (Serially published in Kodansha’s “Runrun” since July 1991!)
Genre: Pretty girls transformation action
Target: Little girls (little boys and families)

“The Intent of the Proposition”

“The times are really led by girls now. The situation is that both boys and girls jump to what girls have found first. Supported by active girls, comics circles have succeeded to send out unconventional works one after another, which include “Kingyo Chuuihou” [Goldfish Warning]

In a tide like that, what has finally appeared is the full-dress transforming pretty girls action “Codename wa Sailor V”.

Sailor suited pretty girls will heroically drive the 90s, and they will come in mode, also involving boys and adults. We can say that this is the birth of a new hero of the end of the century that has been longed for.

We propose this because we want her to make it to everyone’s home as soon as possible!”

  • Art and Text by: Naoko Takeuchi
  • [Text is untranslated, but it is shown on this page that in the original proposal, there was no Usagi. Sorano Hikaru and Amano from “Sailor V” appear. Rei’s name was “Yoruno Miyabi”. Makoto’s name was “Chino Mamoru”, and the fifth girl’s name was “Artemis”.

Preview pages of the next issue in the January ’92 issue of “Nakayoshi”. There have been some changes: that the girl is now Usagi, the cat is Artemis, Usagi’s outfit looks like Sailor V’s, and the name of the manga is “Bishoujo Senshi Sailor V” [Pretty Soldier Sailor V]. These had changed by the time the first chapter appeared, in the following month’s issue.
